WF15 Liverpool Picking up a Pilot, Edward G. Walker. Price: 30.00

Limited edition of 500 numbered prints signed by the artist

Image size: 29 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches

Here is the giant jute clipper Liverpool, the largest sailing ship under the red ensign at the beginning of the 1890's and specially built for the Calcutta jute trade, picking up a pilot off the mouth of the Mersey. This four masted iron ship built by Russel & Company of Glasgow in 1889 was owned by R. W. Leyland & Company of Liverpool. Her gross tonnage was 3396. Her length 333.2 feet, In breadth she measured 47.9 feet and in depth 26.5 feet. She could stow 26,000 bales of jute, a dead weight of nearly 6,000 tons. Her first master was Thomas Calder. When outward bound from Antwerp to San Francisco in 1902 under Captain Lewis, the Liverpoool went ashore in fog on the rocky coast of Aldnerey on the 25th February. She was under all plain sail at the time and the crash on the rocks broke her back. Her crew of 35 were saved.

The pilot schooner in the paining is the number 7 boat Lancashire Witch built by Michael Ratsey of West Cowes in 1863. Withdrawn from service in 1896. Sold in 1897 to Leith owners. Gross tonnage 56. 80.7 feet length, 18 feet breadth, 19.6 feet depth.

This picture is illustrated in Edward G. Walker's book Sea Liverpool which can be purchased clicking on the Amazon link on the left. The original painting is in the collection of Richard Nicholson

Richard Nicholson

I have been buying and selling antique maps since the early 1960's during which time I had a gallery in Watergate Street, Chester for 30 years. I am now able to offer through my websites a personal service to map and print collectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the maps old or are they just copies of old maps?
The maps are all genuine early specimens published in or around the year stated. A guarantee label is provided with each map.
How quickly are order sent off?
Orders are dealt quickly. Orders received in the morning are usually sent off the same day as I receive them. Failing this it is usually the next day.
Is map number --- available?
The web site is updated daily and sold items are removed so it is most likely that the map is available. You can always email me to check availability
What currency are your prices in?
All the prices on my web sites are in English pounds or pounds sterling.
What is the best way to pay?
There is a Shopping Cart for most of the maps to pay by PayPal. The best way is to email me to check a map is available then pay the total amount to my bank account and advise me you have done so. Telephone orders using your Mastercard or Visa Card are also welcome. Overseas customers may find the PayPal Cart the easiest way to by. The reason I prefer the bank payment method is simply because the charges to me are far less than the other methods.
Can I call and see the maps?
I am sorry, no. I had a map and print shop in the centre of Chester for 30 years. Since closing the shop the business is postal only except for the few maps that are available only for collection from Christleton.
How many copies do you have of each map?
I only have one specimen of each map offered. If I had a second similar specimen it would be offered separately under a different reference number.
