RICHARD NICHOLSON of CHESTER

A WORLD OF ANTIQUE MAPS AND PRINTS

James Pepper reading

The Cartographer

GEORGE AUGUSTUS WALPOLE

You will have to accept seeing some of these maps with added blank margins

For the collector of English county maps George Augusts Walpoole provides just one series of maps for the collector. They appear first in The New British Traveller published in 1784 by Alexander Hogg. Most of the maps were engraved by Thomas Conder although his name only appears on the maps of North Wales and South Wales. The maps of Berkshire and Somerset were engraved by Thomas Bowen.

Some pages in the atlas illustrate a number of counties with no space or division between them. So you will find specimens where the maps have been cut from the page and will either have no blank margin on one or two sides or you will find specimens where a new blank margin has been added. Some of the maps have decorative borders around the map.

Ten years later the maps were used agin to illustrate The New and Complete British Traveller written by a Society of Gentlemen, revised, corrected and improved by William Hugh Dalton. Again the book was published by Alexander Hogg. Berkshire and Somerset now have no engravers name and the maps of Cornwall and Devon are shown to be engraved by Hatchett. This later edition is fairly easy to distinguish as the decorative borders to the map have now been removed.
