A bookseller and publisher working at 41 St. Andrew Square and 37 George Square i Edinburgh. Known for Lothian's Plan of the City of Edinburgh and its vicinity, engraved by George Bartholomew was published in 1825 with a further edition in 1829. For county map collectors there is Lothian's County Atlas of Scotland published by Jackson and Cowan of Glasgow and J. Duncan of London. The maps also appear in Atlas of Modern Scotland. The 1829 edition included an appendix Lothian's Historical Atlas of Scotland.
Reproduction maps have their place but if you wanted to inspire a young person in history would it not be better to give them an orginal antique map rather than one that has just come hot off the press, Does not holding an item from the past awaken thoughts of how the item was made and what Britain was like at the the time it was made. Wanting to know more about history was no problem for me, that is if you ignore the fact that at my second Grammar school I came third in the class after just learning Welsh for three months. And so I was channeled into the science stream to learn about Physics, Chemistry and Bioligy. So far removed from the History and Geography stream. But on leaving school I soon found my way back to where my real interests lay.
