Antique Bird Prints by John Gerrard Keulemans

John Gerrard Keulemans was born on 8th June 1842 in Rotterdam. He had an early passion for natural history and was a gifted artist. He enetered Leiden Universite at the age of eighteen where he spent the next two years. His love for travel took him to Africa for a time but fever forced him to return to Europe and a position back at Leiden Museum.

He came to England in 1869 to illustrate books for Bowdler Sharpe and art is best know for the amazing bird paintings which were published widely from 1870 to 1900. He was married twice and had nine children. He died on March 29th 1912 at the age of sixty-nine.

Reverend FRANCIS ORPEN MORRIS

A large series of early hand coloured wood engravings. They were printed from separate wood blocks, one for each colour and then finished some additional hand colouring. The reverse side to each original print is blank. There were a number of editions but where the publication date is known it is stated.

CHARLES ROBERT BREE

1811 - 1886

Charles Robert Bree was a medical practitioner ornithologist and zoologist. Born in Ambleside in the Lake District in 1811. Educated in York and London and later practiced medicine in Bildeston and Stowmarket.

A series of original hand coloured engravings of birds from The Naturalist's Library by Sir William Jardine. The plates were engraved by William Home Lizars, Jardine's brother-in-law. Each print measures about 6 x 3 1/2 inches showing a beautiful hand coloured bird within an uncoloured background. Published circa 1834.
